Forensic Medical Examiners

Forensic Medical Examiners or FMEs are doctors specially trained to assess individuals who have experienced rape or sexual assault. Forensic Nurse Examiners or FNE's are nurses specially trained to assess individuals who have experienced rape or sexual assault. Both nurses and doctors work at Horizon and you may be seen by either.  At Horizon the doctors/nurses are available 24/7 working on a rota that is dedicated for Horizon West Midlands.  There are a team of male and female doctors/nurses.  If you have a preference to see either a male or female doctor/nurse we try to fulfil this wherever possible.  If you choose to be examined a doctor/nurse will meet you at Horizon. The doctor/nurse will fully explain the examination process and the examination will only proceed with your consent. The doctor/nurse can assess individuals who have been raped or sexually assaulted for any immediate medical needs, such as injuries to be treated and will provide information and advice about aftercare, such as considering use of emergency contraception and the potential risk of sexually transmitted infections. They can talk to you about any concerns you may have.  They can also look to document any injuries and collect forensic evidential samples that can be analysed and may be later used in a criminal investigation.
