Faith and Belief Based Abuse
Faith and Belief based Abuse is any abuse linked to faith and/or belief and is not confined to one faith, nationality or ethnic community. Examples have been recorded worldwide among Europeans, Africans, Asians and elsewhere as well as in Christian, Muslim, Hindu and pagan faiths among others. It is often related to Child Abuse and will involve harm to an individual whether that be physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect that is due with a religious intention or purpose. All abuse is illegal in the UK and if you are worried about a child or adult then report it and speak to one of the agencies below.
Branded a Witch
Children accused of witchcraft. This is not just medieval history, it's happening now... and here in Britain. Kevani Kanda explores the dark and secretive world of faith-based child abuse which, in the last few years, has seen an upsurge in children being abused and even murdered by relatives - all in the name of witchcraft. Journeying from her home in London to her birthplace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kevani tries to discover how ancient traditions have been hijacked in the name of Jesus, why families are singling out vulnerable children and hurting them and why toddlers are having to endure excruciating rituals in order to 'rid them of demons'. While in Africa she uncovers the shocking truth that even her own cousin has been accused of witchcraft - setting Kevani on a path to find her and confront her accusers.

Faith and belief-based child abuse, including spirit possession, is a hidden crime and therefore difficult to quantify in terms of the magnitude. From our own research and in consultation with the community, we know this is under-reported. Nonetheless it requires a sound understanding on the part of all professionals of the many and complex issues that can be involved.
