UK's first maternity clinic for rape victims opens
When someone is raped or sexually assaulted the trauma that they feel can often return in situations or moments where they feel out of control or not aware of what is happening. These feelings are common in pregnancy, especially first time pregnancy and can result in women having flash backs of the event and triggering frightening memories.
The new initiative to be run at Barts Health NHS Trust in London could be introduced in other UK hospitals if successful. Specialist train staff will see survivors throughout their pregnancy and put into place extensive birthing plans to reduce the risks of trauma and distress for new mums.
Women can self-refer to the maternity clinic by emailing the team to make an appointment.
